A family of writers, artists and musicians
Aunty Evelyn, my Dad's father's sister's daughter (... ok ok... Dad's cousin), invited us for lunch. I met 10 of my grandfather's sibling's grandchildren -- most of whom I was meeting for the first time.
Aunty Evelyn pulled out a quickly scribbled family tree showing how we were all related. How exciting to hear vignettes of different ones of my family members. Aunt also prepared us a genuine, homemade peranakan lunch, with contributions by some of the "cousins."
After the yummy meal, I discovered other hidden talents of my "cousins." We had a sing-a-long session complete with guitar accompaniment provided by my "cousin" Richard, and keyboard by my brother, Brian. (Richard used to play in a band -- now, he mostly plays for church.)
I found out that one of my "cousins" married a journalist who used to be with the Straits Times. Now she freelances as a magazine editor. We had a good talking -- we even discover we had mutual friends.
I think everyone really enjoyed themselves. We said we'd plan to meet again.
I am awed by God, and the family God has put me in.
